While there are a handful of diacritical accents (tú vives en tu casa), the primary purpose of written accents in Spanish is for pronunciation, specifically to show an atypical stress pattern. Therefore, we think it is imperative that students master the typical (or prototypical) stress pattern first. What do you think? All elementary teachers of native Spanish-speaking children throughout the Spanish-speaking world (including here in the United States) are expected to teach the rules of accentuation as part of the general Artes del Lenguaje (Spanish Language Arts) curriculum. Do you agree that it is important for native Spanish-speaking children throughout the Spanish-speaking world to learn and use proper orthography? Why or why not? Do you think that it is important for English-speakers learning Spanish in a classroom setting to learn and use proper orthography? Why or why not? We think students should know how to confidently and correctly sound out new words as they develop their vocabulary through reading. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? In our survey of first-year language students at the start of their first course, over 90% percent had the very strong or somewhat strong expectation to learn and practice pronunciation. (Note that pronouncing a word incorrectly is different from having a foreign accent: of course, one can have a strong foreign accent and also have correct pronunciation!) Over 70% considered pronunciation a very important or somewhat important skill, vital to communication, listening and speaking. Have you asked your students about their expectations for pronunciation? Why or why not? Do you think you are meeting your students' expectations for pronunciation? Explain. We think that pronunciation should be emphasized, but not graded. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? We think that pronunciation practice builds confidence at the most basic level (seeing a word and knowing how to say it confidently), and therefore the earlier the better. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? We think that knowing how to say a word correctly and confidently helps a student hear it. Do you agree or disagree? Why or why not? A growing number of Spanish teachers believe that pronunciation should not be emphasized, especially not for beginners. Why do you think this is? Do you agree or disagree?
