Daily Routine - Verbs with Direct Objects

Non-reflexive & Reflexive

MINI-LESSON

Reflexive & Non-reflexive Direct-Object Pronouns

Remember that the verb really isn't reflexive, the object is reflexive.

An object is reflexive if it is the same as the subject:

· he sees himself

· they will respect themselves

· I have invited myself

Calling a verb with a reflexive direct object a "reflexive verb" is misleading and inexact.

The verbs included in a typical daily-routine unit are usually only practiced with reflexive pronouns, but they can also be practiced logically with non-reflexive pronouns:

· a man who goes to a barber will say, "he shaves me". And the barber will say "I shave him".

· patients in a hospital will say, "they bathe us", and the nurses will say, "we bathe them".

It's all very logical!
