You understand the main purpose of written accents: to show the stressed vowel is not right before the last consonant that counts. However, there are about 15 pairs of words that are spelled alike and sound alike, but one has a written accent to distinguish it from the other (even though the stress is in the default position). The group includes the question words in Spanish that mean "who?", "what?", and "which?" and the pronoun that means "he".
Also, keep an eye out for a few words with intimidating strings of vowels! Listen carefully to the number of syllables in each word. Listen for a "U" that makes a W-sound and a "U" that is silent. And listen for an "I" that makes a Y-sound.
